WOMEN IN STEM LEADERSHIP ROLES BREAKING CYCLE OF MALE-DOMINATED FIELD
February 2021
Mariah Lundgren gets to wake up every day and do what she loves.
Being a producer at the Platte Basin Timelapse, a multimedia project that captures changes in the Platte Basin, she gets to combine her curiosity and passion for science to share stories about the natural world.
Yet, she is among a minority of women in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) careers.
STEM fields have a long history of being a male-dominated world. According to the American Association of University Women, a nonprofit organization for the equity of women, despite the gender gap growing smaller each year, females still continue to be largely underrepresented in STEM disciplines. But it’s not for a lack of talent or ability.
“We didn’t do it because we didn’t see other girls doing it,” Lundgren said. “It’s an endless cycle.”

Photography
As a hobby slash side job, I take photos of my family, friends, and friends of friends. I love photography, always have. I got a camera as a graduation present when I was 14 and fell in love. Ever since, I've been doing all I can to improve my skill and capturing real, raw, beautiful photos.
DAVID'S STORY
Multimedia
Last May I traveled to Rwanda in hopes to create a short multimedia documentary on Rwandan life. But what I came back with was so much more. I gained a new perspective, a better more hopeful one on life. I made an incredible connection with a family there and got to learn more about their world and now I get to share their story with all of you.
WEB DESIGN
University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Department of Educational Administration
As the social media specialist for EDAD I wanted to do more than just reach people through Twitter. I noticed their website was neither engaging nor up to date, so I decided to take it upon myself to fix that. My project for the last year has been to teach myself how to code, rewrite, redesign and improve the website. I now manage the entire site, tracking data through Google Analytics to assess who my audience and where and how they are viewing the site. It's still a work in progress but it's getting there.
COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST
University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Department of Educational Administration
As the communications specialist for the Department of Educational Administration at UNL, I create, develop and write social media content for multiple audiences across platforms like Facebook and Twitter. By analyzing patterns, trends, and issues to improve our outreach and month over month growth, increasing engagement by 171%. Additionally, I write original content for newsletters and website posts, all while I continuously monitor all interactions across social channels while executing a plan according to the department’s goals.
I also manage the department’s website and launched a newly designed layout, all while tracking traffic on Google Analytics.
SOCIAL MEDIA INTERN
Platte Basin Timelapse Project
At PBT, I used social media to create content and tell stories about water and the life around us. I wrote, shot and edited posts for multiple social media platforms on a weekly basis. I strategized and collaborated with my teammates to to share PBT’s brand, story and relationships all while focusing on the big picture to create a narrative of educational outreach and environmental conservation. At PBT, I am not just a social media intern, I am a writer, a photographer, a teammate, a curator, an editor, a graphic designer, and anything else I can be to strengthen the PBT organization and tell their story. I am a hands-on, flexible worker, willing to go above and beyond.
